INTERNET ART: networks, performative programming, and web as context

Network Project

In this day and age, the amount of information we can learn about the private lives of others from social media is overwhelming. This information is useful but also toxic to personal relationships, especially romantic ones. Many people become obsessed in relationships and after relationships with checking up on their partner or ex via social media to see if they can find hints that they are seeing anyone new. I created a network of fake profiles on Instagram to mimic this. This project exists at the instagram handle @shittyexboyfriend.

I created a series of fake accounts of imaginary “women that your ex follows”. The bio sections of these profiles highlight the way we may compare ourselves to these “new love interests” that we may imagine our ex is pursuing. With the wealth of information shared, it is easy to think we know people’s stories and create scenarios and comparisons.
